The Serve Master is a popular training aid that you might have seen advertised in a variety of different media publications.
It was created by tennis instructor Lisa Dodson. Lisa is a well established tennis coach that has worked with numerous top players and was a top player herself on the WTA Tour.
The Serve Master is well built and easy to use. The end of the whip will contain one of the the 3 different options(if you select the Academy package) and that is what provides the weight differential that helps to groove a pure swing.
How the Serve Master Performed
We tested the Serve Master and found it to be very useful for providing feedback and building muscle memory through repetition. It is easy to use and light-weight so you could carry it in your tennis bag.
One of the biggest strengths of the Serve Master is its versatility. It can be used for a variety of different swing planes so that you can build the proper muscle memory develop on more than just your serve. It will get you positioned in different ways to train different aspects of each of your swings.
Now if you don’t have a coach, you will first need to figure out what to correct in your swing. This can be difficult, but the Serve Master makes this fairly simple because it will naturally indicate to you what a smooth swing feels and looks like when using the training aid.
They also have a with a 15 minute video that gives you instructions on how to get the most out of the Serve Master and a downloadable instruction booklet as well. This video on the website will show you how to use the device and diagnose your swing flaws.
In the video, Lisa teaches you how to check and analyze your:
The video is well done but we could see it being a bit overwhelming for a newer player trying to identify multiple swing flaws.
At $119.95, the Serve Master is one of the more expensive training aid options on the market. In fact you could easily construct a similar device on your own using just a few parts. Most players use just a regular tube sock stuffed with a tennis ball to execute this type of training, although it’s not as nice as the Serve Master.
Versatile tool that can be used to train many aspects of the swing
Provides feedback to build muscle memory
Great if you know specifically what you need to work on in your swing
You need to self-diagnose your swing flaws
A bit more expensive than most training aids
The Bottom Line
The Serve Master is a useful aid that can help correct a number of swing flaws. It is great for building muscle memory through repetition, and is a good tool to use in conjunction with other training.
On the negative side, it can be difficult especially for newer players to know what drills to use. Also, at $119.95 it is one of the more expensive training aid options on the market.
